Ilza Burchett


Ilza Burchett: Born in Bulgaria. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Studied painting and mural art at Fine Arts Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria (Masters Degree in mural art and techniques).
Studied different European artistic tradition - particularly in Italy, France, Spain, Holland - and travelled widely through Europe.
Worked as a muralist and painter in Paris, France and Sofia, Bulgaria. Lived in Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory of Australia.

She has exhibited in national exhibitions in Bulgaria, also in Australia and Hong Kong.
Has completed numerous public, corporate and private commissions (murals, paintings and mixed media works) in Bulgaria, Australia and Asia.
Some of her major murals are the 450 sq m mural in Citiplaza Hong Kong, and “Panoramic View of Sydney, 1820” in Park Hyatt, The Rocks, Sydney.

Currently lives in Sydney with artist husband George Burchett, and son Graham.
Ilza’s work explores different media and techniques - modified versions of fresco and encaustic are ever present in her work.
The richness of materials like beeswax, gold, silver, sand and cement, silk, hand-made paper and pigments play an important role in defining her artistic expression.

In her search for the spiritual dimension in her art through matter, she draws inspiration from the history of art and her interactions with different cultures.
Her paintings are in public, corporate and private collections in Bulgaria, France, Australia, China, USA and Brazil.
